Wildlife Monitoring System

Training activities have been performed with rangers from 12 Regional Administrations of Protected Areas (RAPA) on the preparation of the Inventory for the Wildlife Monitoring System. National and international experts in the field participated in the training activities as well. The system is intended to support the registration and monitoring of the wildlife fauna. It will be the main system that serves to the sustainable protection and management of biodiversity and its components as well as management of hunting activities.

The main purpose of the training has been to provide the right information through monitoring of the wildlife populations trends, as well as on its pressures and threats, in order to improve its retention management and decision making.

The training expertise focused on identification of the institutional capacity building needs in the fauna monitoring process, not just theoretically, but also in practice. During the implementation of these activities, a special attention was given to the environmental rangers and their involvement throughout the entire process.

The rangers were introduced to the monitoring, principles and obligations of the wildlife monitoring system (WMIS), setting up patrols and their wildlife monitoring tasks, including monitoring of dead animals, the use of Global Positioning System (GPS), illegal activities, etc. They were also introduced to how to complete the necessary forms and formats designed in accordance with the European Directive requirements on the  monitoring process, but also how the patrols should perform and report.
